Monday Meeting, today

Yesterday was monday meeting and we had a lot to talk about and think about as well. It was mainly headed up by Phil who kind of felt that Polished Off was getting all the limelight and it is kinda obvious i was looking at my blog and its all polished off. So, while he is finishing off the storyboard we are getting on with other bits and bobs meaning that once the storyboard is finished all that needs to happen is animate, render and composite. Which is good because if we leave it, it will just fall behind, which is not good if we can prevent it. So, its all on Splay at the moment im currently working on the spotlight. Unwrapped the UVs for it and started texturing i wanted to keep some consistency so i asked Grigs about his pinstriped texture, images will be up later this week, but initial tests are good. I then believe i am unwrapping the uvs for the house then the steps in the iterior shouldnt be to bad, but Grigs was saying i might texture something that will be a challenge if i was too i feel, but will give it a shot i got a few ideas in mind for it.

As for polished off i will wait for things to come from dan and the rest i have a feeling i will be creating some textures, would really like the clock now :)

And today has been fairly productive with the dissertation just been going through my questionnaires and emailing a few companies whilst deleating some of chapter two and adding bits and bobs to other parts. But downloaded Second Life, which is all good and will also be some primary research for me but will have to wait and see what happens.

A presentation on Friday for PPD on which i believe

The texturing so far...

Well, as you can see there have been a few alterations from other images before, we wanted it to reflect and also to be a bit brighter for the base metal, which ment alterations to all the texture maps which was fun also lowered the image size for the textures as there wasnt much difference for what we would see from the camera. The pillow has also changed and added some details for when Ed is lying on it making it look like creases etc.
So, i think i am now on to doing the ceiling so thats all good going to take refrence from the incredibles scene in the office as they have a similar ceiling to us and then i would like to move on to the clock and maybe fire alarm after watching the Toy Story 3 trailer i want that shot to look amazing! Apart from this me and shuffle have een working hard on the degree show looking for contacts and researching companies in England which is ime consuming, but will benefit us, i have also been doing some work for graphic design creating some 3D mock ups of the display cubes what they were going to use. However, i think Phil may want me for SPLAY so will see what happens on Monday!
The group wanted me to work on the nCloth for the bed but that is going to wait for the character to be rigged so it will work correctly instead of me doing guess work. Hopefully it will be ok for the animators and not slow down the systems if so we will have to rethink, i have never really used nCloth the tests were good so hopefully they can just be transferred.

The Bed for Ed

Okay so as said before im now working on texturing the bed for Ed, and looking at Grigsbys work of creases i added a few subtle ones on to the bed, my first test for it was awful last week. I also had some trouble with the metal for the bed which was anoying me last week and decided to move on to another part of the bed, the wheel. Which was pretty productive, i think i work really well with Edgley next to me as i do a basic texture and test an idea, he then tells me how to tweak it and make it go better for the film. It works well, the treads still need some work and a bit of grease, scratches and oil need to be put in to give it a bit of character instead of looking like boring lambert or blinn. I also looked into a new image format .EXR the file size is smaller its 32 bit and it looks alot more crisper i feel, maybe once the bed is finished i may look into it a bit more. But below is a nice image or two of what i have created so far.

Hand Test

Taking into Hulse's way of working, i created four seperate layers, diffuse, sss, specular and occlusion, in photoshop i then layered these images in the same order. sss was multiplied over diffuse, diffuse opacity was lowered slightly, spec was color dodge i think and opacity was lowered to around 30% over sss, then occlusion was on top multiplied and opacity was lowered to 70%. Below is the four seperate layers then the final outcome.

Last Week

Okay last week i completed the machine for now i will need to go back and do a normal and spec map but that wont take too long. I received the bed from spence who did a good job with the Uvin i did have to tweak a few bits to suit how i work but the major majority was great, so thanks Spence.

We also ran into Alex Hulse on Friday who was helping us with SSS something i had been looking in to a lil bit, he also showed us some stuff on the render farm and setting up render layers, which was great knowledge for me and how to do it all. We were then able to see his test in after effects, which inspired me to go back to it.
